Discover: Living in Columbia

January 2, 2019

If you are moving to Greater Columbia, then lucky you!

Sunset at Lake Murray

Here are some of the best reasons to call the Midlands of South Carolina “home”.

  • You’ll be living in the very center of one of the most beautiful states in the U.S. Our geography ranges from the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the lowcountry running along the coast. Because of the state’s small size, we are able to drive to either the gorgeous mountains in the Upstate or to the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean near Charleston in less than 2.5 hours.
  • Our rivers- the Broad, the Saluda, and the Congaree- are our best natural recreational feature. Ride down them in a tube, kayak or canoe…or enjoy them from the Riverwalk- a series of paved trails and boardwalks that runs parallel to the rivers. Cormorants, Great Blue Herons, Canadian Geese, ducks, songbirds, small mammals, and deer are always present!
  • Lake Murray is a 50,000 acre man-made lake just 15 minutes from downtown. This massive lake offers boaters and fishermen over 500 miles of shoreline to explore. More than 8000 homes have been built along its shoreline.

College Town

The Postcard Mural in Five Points, by Chad Brady

Home to the University of South Carolina and its 30,000+ student population, Columbia residents take advantage of the musical performances, theatre and dance, art and museum exhibits, and sports games that such a big college town has to offer.

Not too hot, not too cold, just right…that’s our weather! You may have heard that we’re somehow “famously hot”, but in reality we have a decent climate, even in summer.

Our average July high is 95 degrees, and our average January high is 58 degrees. Pack the sunglasses and leave the snow shovel behind!

The median rental rate for Richland County is $1150, and $1200 in Lexington County.

Affordable Living

The median price of a single family home currently listed in the Columbia Metro area is $209,900. Career opportunities abound in a state with around a 3% unemployment.

Known for a friendly a generous reception towards our guests, visitors and newcomers, the people of the Midlands trip over themselves as they race to h old doors open, do lots of smiling, know to acknowledge kindness from others, and are just plain fun to be around.
